| Rebecca Caudill Young Readers Award Program |
November 2009 Parents of 4th and 5th grade students: Your child will have the opportunity to participate in the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers Award Program. This is an annual award given to the author of the book voted most outstanding in grades four through eight in participating Illinois schools. The award is named in honor of Rebecca Caudill, who lived and wrote in Urbana, Illinois for nearly 50 years. The award is given in recognition of her literary talent and the universal appeal of her books, which have touched the hearts of many children and young adults. There will be 20 different titles for your student to choose from. They must read at least 3 titles to have the opportunity to vote. If they read 5 titles, their name will be entered in a drawing to be Mr. Staver’s assistant for part of a day. These books may be read independently or you may read them to your child. Some titles may be available on tape at the public library. A list of titles and information about the books may be found at this website: rcyba.org/2010Resources.htm or the Antioch Elementary School website. Not all titles may have content you personally think is suitable for your child. Please preview the books for appropriate content. There will be at least 3 copies of all 20 titles available in our library. Students may check out one title at a time from our library as long as they have no late books. Some titles may be available at the public library. Students will use the Accelerated Reader program to take quizzes on each book read. No quiz will be retaken. Students will not ask classmates what questions are or ask for the answers. If a student is caught breaking these rules they will not be eligible to participate in the Caudill program. Students will be responsible for notifying the librarian when they have read and passed quizzes on 3 and 5 titles. The librarian will verify that tests have been taken and passed. The Caudill program will run from November 1st through February 19th. The last day to take a quiz will be February 19th. Voting will take place during the week of February 22nd. We hope you encourage your child to participate in this reading program. If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Tiddens at 847-838-8937 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
